Need to split your BGE bill into installments?

BGE offers several programs for customers who need help managing their bills. The Due Date Extension allows eligible residential customers (without a past-due balance, not enrolled in AutoPay or BGEasy, and not already on a payment plan) to move their due date. Extensions can be requested as often as needed, as long as the required waiting period has passed (90 days normally; 180 days after a default).

The Deferred Payment Arrangement Plan is available for customers with a past-due balance. It spreads payments over 1 to 12 months, but customers must also pay their current monthly charges on top of each installment. Eligibility requires no BGE payment plan defaults in the past 18 months and a total past-due balance under $5,000.

The Bill Extender Plan adjusts BGE bill due dates to align with Social Security, Disability, V.A., or other fixed-income payment schedules. The Budget Billing program smooths seasonal billing peaks by spreading energy costs evenly across the year.

BGE also connects customers to external assistance through Single Stop (a free, private tool for finding help with housing, food, healthcare, and more) and the EmPower Maryland LIEEP program for energy-efficient home improvements for income-qualified households.

If the goal is to pay the bill in full now and split the cost into smaller repayments, Deferit can pay an eligible BGE bill on your behalf and let you repay it in 4 smaller installments.

Common Questions About BGE

Does BGE charge a late fee?

Yes. BGE charges a standard late payment fee when a bill is not paid by the due date. The exact dollar amount or percentage is governed by Maryland PSC tariff and is not published on BGE's website. BGE's Due Date Extension page confirms the fee exists: if you accept a due date extension but do not pay off the balance by the agreed-upon date, you may be charged a standard late payment fee.

Can I split my BGE bill into installments?

BGE does not offer a bill-splitting product for your current charges. Its Deferred Payment Arrangement Plan lets customers with a past-due balance spread that past-due amount over 1 to 12 monthly installments, but you must also pay your regular current charges on top of each installment. Eligibility requires no BGE plan defaults in the past 18 months and a total past-due balance under $5,000. For splitting your current charges into 4 bi-weekly installments, Deferit can pay your BGE bill in full now and let you repay across 4 installments.

What happens if I miss a BGE payment?

If you miss a payment, BGE may charge a standard late payment fee (exact amount governed by Maryland PSC tariff). Continued non-payment may result in service disconnection. After disconnection, you must pay all past-due amounts and a reconnect fee (amount also governed by Maryland PSC tariff) before service is restored. If you have missed an installment on a BGE Deferred Payment Arrangement, all remaining past-due amounts become due immediately and you may lose eligibility for future payment plans for up to 18 months.

How do I pay my BGE bill online?

You can pay through your BGE My Account at bge.com using a bank account or credit/debit card (fees may apply for card payments). If you do not have an online account, use Guest Pay at secure.bge.com/payments/payonline for a one-time payment using your phone number and last 4 digits of your SSN/TIN, or your account number and ZIP code. AutoPay from a bank account is free and automatically pays your bill each month.

What is BGE's Due Date Extension?

BGE's Due Date Extension lets eligible residential customers move their bill due date when they need a little extra time. To qualify, you must have no past-due balance, no active due date extension or payment arrangement, and not be enrolled in AutoPay or BGEasy. You must also wait 90 days after your last extension (180 days if you defaulted on a prior extension). You can request an extension online through My Account or by calling 1-800-685-0123.

Does BGE have a returned payment fee?

Yes. BGE charges $15.00 per returned payment. If you have a second returned payment within a 12-month rolling period (or one returned payment after service restoration), BGE will no longer accept personal checks for 12 months and you will lose AutoPay/ACH eligibility during that period. You would need to pay by cash, money order, debit card, or major credit card. For questions, contact bgereturnedpayments@bge.com.

Customer Service Tips for BGE Customers

Have these ready before you call. Account number, service address, billing ZIP code, last bill amount, and preferred payment method. For residential service call 1-800-685-0123, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For a natural gas emergency, call 1-877-778-7798 or 1-800-685-0123 immediately (24/7).

How to read a BGE bill. BGE bills show separate line items for electric delivery and natural gas delivery. Electric charges include a customer charge, distribution charge, transmission charge, generation charge, and various state surcharges. Natural gas charges include a customer charge, distribution charge, and commodity (supply) charge. Seasonal usage varies significantly, so comparing month-over-month usage (shown on the bill) helps identify whether a higher bill reflects usage changes or a rate adjustment.

How to lower your bill. Enroll in AutoPay from a bank account (free, no fees) to avoid any convenience fees. Budget Billing spreads your annual energy cost evenly to avoid seasonal spikes. The EmPower Maryland LIEEP program offers free energy-efficiency improvements for income-qualified households. If the challenge is cash-flow timing rather than reducing usage, Deferit's Pay-in-4 option can split your bill into 4 installments, subject to eligibility.
