Meridian is the county seat of Lauderdale County, Mississippi, and the eighth most populous city in the state, with a population of 35,052 at the 2020 census. The city was officially incorporated on February 10, 1860, and has operated under a mayor-council, or "strong mayor," form of government since 1985, with a mayor elected at-large every four years and a five-member city council elected from single-member wards.
