About ComEd
Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is a regulated electric distribution utility serving more than 4 million customers across northern Illinois, covering approximately 11,400 square miles from roughly I-80 north to the Wisconsin border. ComEd is a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), a Fortune 200 energy company headquartered in Chicago. As a regulated monopoly utility overseen by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), ComEd delivers electricity and handles connects, disconnects, and billing directly.

Late Fees & Payment Policies
| Policy / Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|

Need to split your ComEd bill into installments?
ComEd offers several programs for customers who need help with their electric bill. The Deferred Payment Arrangement (DPA) allows eligible residential customers to spread a past-due balance over 4–12 months, in addition to the regular monthly bill, after making a down payment. A Due Date Extension can push the due date by up to 21 days for eligible accounts. Budget Billing spreads energy costs evenly month to month based on 12 months of past usage.
Income-qualified customers may be eligible for the Low Income Discount (LID) Program, LIHEAP (federal energy assistance), SARP/Catch Up & Save (eliminates past-due balance and provides stabilized billing), or the Deposit and Late Payment Charge Waiver Program. The Your Neighbor Fund provides additional hardship assistance. ComEd's Smart Assistance Manager (SAM) tool at comed.com helps match customers with eligible programs.
If the goal is to pay the bill in full now and split the cost into smaller repayments, Deferit can pay an eligible ComEd bill on your behalf and let you repay it in 4 smaller installments.

Common Questions About ComEd
Does ComEd charge a late fee? ›
Yes. ComEd charges a standard late payment fee when a bill is not paid by the original due date. The specific rate is governed by ICC tariffs and is not published directly on comed.com pages. Even if you use a Due Date Extension (which gives up to 21 extra days), the late payment fee still applies after the original due date. Customers enrolled in LIHEAP or SARP have their late charges automatically waived.

Can I split my ComEd bill? ›
ComEd does not offer a direct pay-in-4 split. Two options exist through ComEd directly: a Due Date Extension (up to 21 extra days, though a late fee still applies after the original due date) and a Deferred Payment Arrangement (DPA), which spreads a past-due balance over 4–12 months added to the regular monthly bill, with a down payment required upfront. For an actual 4-installment split with no down payment required, Deferit can pay your ComEd bill in full immediately and let you repay across 4 bi-weekly installments. Eligibility check before you commit.

What happens if I miss a ComEd payment? ›
A standard late payment fee is added to your account after the original due date. If the balance remains unpaid, ComEd may proceed toward service disconnection in accordance with ICC rules. After a qualifying payment at an in-person location, customers with a smart meter have power restored within 2 hours. Reconnection and deposit requirements are governed by ICC tariffs. If you need more time, the Deferred Payment Arrangement or Due Date Extension programs may help.

Customer Service Tips for ComEd Customers
Have these ready before you call. Account number, service address, billing ZIP code, last bill amount, and your preferred payment method. For residential customer service call 1-800-334-7661 (Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–7 p.m.). For faster service, shorter wait times are typically Tuesday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
How to read your ComEd bill. A ComEd bill typically shows two main charge categories: supply charges (the cost of electricity itself, which may be set by ComEd or a competitive supplier) and delivery charges (ComEd's regulated cost to deliver electricity to your home, set by the ICC). Riders and taxes are itemized separately. If you are on Budget Billing, the bill also shows your actual usage versus the smoothed monthly amount and whether you are ahead or behind.
How to lower your bill. Review your kWh usage trend across recent bills and compare it to the same period last year. ComEd's Budget Billing program can smooth out seasonal spikes. AutoPay via bank account is free. Income-eligible customers can reduce costs through the Low Income Discount Program, LIHEAP, or SARP/Catch Up & Save. If the challenge is cash flow timing rather than reducing usage, Deferit's Pay-in-4 option can split your bill into 4 installments, subject to eligibility.
