Need to split your DTE Energy bill into installments?
DTE Energy offers a Payment Agreement (installment plan) to all customers who need additional time to pay a past-due balance. It requires an initial down payment, with the remaining arrears spread across monthly installments in addition to ongoing energy charges. No late fees are charged while on a Payment Agreement. Set up online or by calling (800) 477-4747.
The Shutoff Protection Plan is available to income-qualified customers and senior citizens year-round. It combines past-due balance and future energy charges into one monthly payment and protects from disconnection for 12 months.
Additional programs include BudgetWise Billing (levelized billing), the Low-Income Self-Sufficiency Plan (LSP), State Emergency Relief (SER), the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP), the Home Heating Credit, Heat and Warmth Fund, Salvation Army assistance, and Winter Protection. Contact United Way at 211 for energy assistance referrals.
If the goal is to pay the bill in full now and split the cost into smaller repayments, Deferit can pay an eligible DTE Energy bill on your behalf and let you repay it in 4 smaller installments.

Customer Service Tips for DTE Energy Customers
Have these ready before you call. Your DTE Energy account number, service address, last bill amount, and preferred payment method. For residential billing and payment support call (800) 477-4747 (Mon-Fri 8a-6p, Sat 8a-2p). For gas emergencies call (800) 947-5000 any time, day or night.
How to read charges on a DTE Energy bill. DTE bills separate electric and gas service charges. Look for Distribution and Delivery charges, which cover the cost of getting energy to your home, as well as Supply charges for the energy itself. Taxes and any program charges (such as BudgetWise Billing adjustments or low-income surcharges) appear as separate line items. A returned payment appears as 'Bank Returned Check Charge' under Other Charges and Credits.
How to lower your bill. Enroll in BudgetWise Billing to spread costs evenly across the year and avoid seasonal spikes. Check whether you qualify for the Low-Income Self-Sufficiency Plan, MEAP, or Home Heating Credit by contacting United Way at 211. Review your energy usage in the DTE Energy Mobile App and identify high-use appliances. If the challenge is cash-flow timing rather than reducing usage, Deferit's Pay-in-4 option can split your bill into 4 installments, subject to eligibility.
